DIY Toy DisinfectantMrs Gee
Baby G loves to put everything in her mouth- toys, tv remote’s, diapers, her fist and even her foot! and every time she does this, it makes me paranoid. I washed all her toys, sometimes even steamed them to sterilise them before every use until it exhausted me and I resorted to only washing them or soaking in boiling water. This too is a little time consuming so I found a quick and completely non-toxic way to clean and disinfect my baby’s playthings.
It is to be kept in mind that by cleaning a toy, we are not killing the germs but just washing dirt and grime off it. The following ways are to disinfect toys to wipe out bacteria and germs on them.
- Spray Hydrogen Peroxide on the toy and wipe it clean with a microfiber cloth. Hydrogen Peroxide is a hospital grade disinfectant and microfiber cloths are made to lift dirt and trap germs. Hydrogen Peroxide can be found in pharmacies and Al-Fateh
- Mix equal parts distilled (or boiled ) water and vinegar and add a few drops of lemon/eucalyptus/tea tree/lavender/peppermint oils (optional). Put in glass spray bottle, spray on toys and wipe clean.
- For stuffed toys: You can put them in an airtight bag and stick them in the freezer for a couple of hours to kill germs OR you can machine wash them with vinegar and baking soda. Another great way is to leave them out in the sun and for tough stains, you can rub lemon juice on the stain and leave it out to “sun”.
Bleaches and other stain removing products contain carcinogens which are not only destructive to the environment but also your precious baby’s health. These methods are toxic free and easy on the pocket. Happy cleaning!
